Priest Attempts Suicide Following Sex Abuse Investigation

Reverend Alejandro Flores was critically injured when he jumped from a balcony inside a closed church in downtown Joliet. The police have ruled out foul play, believing that Reverend Flores attempted to commit suicide stemming from an investigation by Kane County authorities into allegations of sexual abuse.
Joliet Deputy Chief of Police Mike Trafton stated that the investigation is leaning toward a suicide ruling and expects the investigation to be closed soon. Kane County investigators will be handling the sexual abuse investigation.

Although the church is closed, Reverend Flores apparently was able to access the building. He suffered severe head injuries after taking a 20-foot plunge from the church balcony. Prior to becoming a Vicar, Flores was a deacon at St. Elizabeth Seton in Naperville. He was ordained in November 2008.

Flores was put on administrative leave last Monday after church officials learned that a 13-year-old had made sexual abuse allegations against Flores.

Flores, 37, was charged with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two counts of criminal sexual assault after being accused of molesting the minor in a West Chicago church. The abuse victim, a 13-year-old St. Charles boy, had allegedly been molested from January 2005 to January, 2010.
