Yesterday, I let our readers know that Chicago CBS local news would be covering a story about Valentine’s Day and cheating spouses/partners. CBS 2′s Mai Martinez spent the day with the staff at MSI Detective Services to talk about why Valentine’s Day is such a busy day for private detectives. Martinez also visited the U-Spy Store (owned and operated by MSI Detective Services) for those wishing to purchase their own spy equipment.
If you missed the segment, you can watch the video by clicking on the link to this story at the end.
We expect florists to be busy on Valentine’s Day and candy to fly off the shelves, but did you know it’s also a busy holiday for private investigators?
Forget flowers and chocolates, all some people want for Valentine’s Day is to know if their significant other is cheating.
This is where Perry Myers and his team of private investigators at MSI Detective Services come in.
Theresa Cheriachangel keeps busy with her case load at MSI Detective Services. She said, “A case that I have going on today, she’ll be meeting her … boyfriend for a Valentine’s lunch, and her husband around the same vicinity, actually, for Valentine’s dinner.”
Wow, that is one busy woman. I couldn’t juggle two men let alone keep a straight face. I am a horrible liar.
Private investigators say the above scenario is often the case, making Valentine’s Day one of the best days to catch cheaters.
“As soon as they leave their house, until they come back, we’ll keep an eye on them,” Cheriachangel said.
For those who would rather do the detective work themselves, you can buy some of the same gadgets the pros use such as GPS trackers. “You can actually see where the car is in real time,” said Perry Myers, private detective and owner of MSI Detective Services and the U-Spy Store. (more…)

Sometimes a robber chooses the wrong victim and everything backfires. This was the case with a robbery in downtown Chicago last Friday.
A 50-year-old woman chased her robber for almost a mile, cornered him in an alley and then gave him a lecture. She must be in awesome shape.
The woman was riding a Chicago Transit Authority bus in the Loop just after midnight when police said Jenar Sanders, 18, swiped her wallet from her purse. He then jumped off the bus at Huron and State streets and took off, but he wouldn’t get very far.
Trailing Sanders, the woman alerted others as she ran down the street, according to the Chicago Tribune. The CTA bus driver and a hotel staff member at the Omni Hotel called the police.
The race came to a quick halt when police said Sanders ended up cornered in an alley off Superior Street between Wabash Avenue and Rush Street, surrounded by the victim and others who had joined the chase.
“She kept telling him God didn’t want him to steal her wallet,” a police source told the Tribune. (more…)

Given how bad things have been in the area of cyber-espionage and malware attacks, it is predicted to get even worse.
There was a surge in the past two years in the number of malware-based attacks that resulted in sensitive data being stolen from government agencies, defense contractors, Fortune 500 companies, human rights organizations and other institutions. (See also “How to Remove Malware From Your Windows PC.”).
Rik Ferguson, director of security research and communication at security firm Trend Micro says, “I absolutely expect this trend to continue through 2012 and beyond.” ”Espionage activities have, for hundreds of years, taken advantage of cutting-edge technologies to carry out covert operations; 2011 was not the beginning of Internet-facilitated espionage, nor will it be the end,” he added.
Threats like Stuxnet, which is credited with setting back Iran’s nuclear program by several years, or its successor, Duqu, have shocked the security industry with their level of sophistication. For those of you who may recall, Stuxnet was a computer worm designed to target Iran’s nuclear program. Duqu is believed to be closely related to the Stuxnet industrial sabotage worm - it borrows the same code and functionality. Duqu is a flexible malware delivery framework used for data exfiltration. Experts believe that they are only the beginning and that more highly advanced malware will be launched in 2012.
I sure hope the security industry, businesses, etc., are ready to adequately deal with these attacks.
For those looking to keep their personal or small business computers safe, MSI Detective Services performs computer forensic data recovery services. The U-Spy Store staff can also assist you with the detection and removal of spyware and malware. We also carry monitoring and tracking software for computers. I have one of these programs on my computers as it helps me track the activities of my computer.

As you have probably read or heard, credit cards, passports, driver’s licenses and more are moving to the use of Smart Cards or RFID technology. Eventually, you will no longer need to swipe your credit cards, etc. You will simply need to pass by a scanner. The advancement of technology is closely followed by criminals who learn how to exploit these advances. The way it works is someone can get close to you with a portable scanner and steal your data without having to lift your wallet. This method is becoming common with identity thieves.
The good news is you can do something to protect your data. The U-Spy Store sells Smart Card RFID Defender Protection Sleeves. They are reasonably priced and will give you peace of mind, particularly during the holiday shopping season. Also, if you will be traveling with your passport, you want to protect this too. We also sell Passport RFID Protection Sleeves. The U-Spy Store also carries a couple of other items that protect your data.
The following story explains how a research team successfully hacked a commonly used RFID smartcard. (more…)

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) for the State of Connecticut is considering adding GPS tracking devices to its fleet of 800 vehicles to monitor the misuse of its vehicles.
It is becoming more common for many companies and government agencies to install GPS Tracking Devices in their fleets of vehicles used by employees to try and control costs and employee abuse of their vehicles. There are also safety considerations for installing these devices – for employees and customers.
Fortune 500 companies such as UPS and FedEx already use GPS tracking technology to guard themselves against missing deliveries and ensuring that their drivers use the best routes. The installation of these devices also helps to safeguard against misuse of valuable company time, costly fuel, and can provide greater safety and accountability for drivers.
DCF Commissioner Joette Katz estimates these GPS devices will save the state of Connecticut approximately $250,000 in the first year by being able to provide data on the misuse of its vehicles, verify overtime hours, and may potentially save 20% on fuel consumption. The state’s legislature reported that it spent $15.7 million on gas in fiscal 2008. Since then, the state has taken steps to reduce its fleet by 800 cars. The agency is also proposing cutting overtime by 10 percent for a savings of $1.7 million next year.
If the proposal is enacted, approximately one-quarter of the states 3,243-vehicle fleet could be tracked. (more…)

Dear Readers:
Although our blog stories are usually about serious crimes that have been committed, we like to occasionally lighten the mood. An internet service provider sent me this story and I thought I would share it with you.
If you have a relative that is a technology geek, you are grateful. He can sit down at your computer and accomplish in a matter of minutes what may have taken you hours or days to figure out. Plus, he can save you a ton of money on tech support. If he is a ‘true’ technology geek, he will fit these 10 signs. (more…)

I posted a story on November 4, 2011 about an “Ethical Hacking Lab” being offered in the Faculty of Engineering and Computing School at Coventry University in the U.K. It appears you don’t have to attend a university to receive training in the fight against cyber crimes.
The National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) is dedicated to the education of law enforcement professionals in the field of computer forensics and digital evidence handling techniques. The United States Secret Service has been implementing both cyber crime and computer forensic training for state and local law enforcement officers, prosecutors and judges from across the country.
This story is about Officer Bill Michael who has just completed a program courtesy of the NCFI. The Coon Rapids Police Department now has the ability to handle computer forensics investigations. This is where Officer Michael works.
Although Officer Micheal is COPs (community oriented policing) officer in the department responsible for dealing with issues and problems in the city’s multi-housing complexes, with the new computer equipment in his office at the police department and the computer forensics training under his belt, he is also investigating cyber crime and other offenses involving computers in conjunction with the department’s investigators. Last week, Coventry introduced a brand new Ethical Hacking Lab in the Faculty of Engineering and Computing. This lab will prepare students to deal with the fight against cybercrime.
The Applied Research Group (ARG) in Digital Security and Forensics (SaFe) at Coventry University was established in 2006. It seeks to advance technical knowledge in the broad area of digital security and computer forensics; offering educational research opportunities, developing technical products and software, and providing consultancy services.
The Group works closely with Leamington-based IT security business partner Nettitude, who generously donated around £17,000 worth of equipment to make the new Ethical Hacking Lab possible. (more…)
