Young women face the highest rates of dating violence and sexual assault. Nineteen percent of women (nearly 1 in 5) report experiencing sexual assault while in college. Many of these assaults occur when the offender, often an acquaintance, has targeted and isolated a young woman in vulnerable circumstances. Dating violence also disproportionately affects young women in this demographic. Young people turn to each other for help more often than they turn to parents, but most don’t know how to intervene if a friend needs help. Moreover, sixty percent of college students who have been in an abusive relationship say no one helped them. Websites, hotlines and resources are available for those who have experienced or are currently experiencing violence and abuse.
There are tools women (and men) can use to try and protect themselves from a potential attack. For example, carrying pepper spray or a personal alarm is highly recommended. In addition, GPS trackers can assist others in locating you should you need immediate help. Always tell someone if you are going on a date, especially with someone new, and what time you expect to return. This way, if someone suspects foul play, they can give authorities this information and also let them know you have a GPS tracking device. You could also install video surveillance equipment in your dorm room or home as an added measure of security. (more…)

In Kitchener, IA, a business executive who was well respected recently lost that respect–and his job–following the discovery of a hidden camera in the bathroom of his home. According to those following the case, he recorded friends and employees on the bathroom cam.
The 57-year-old man’s identity has been concealed in order to protect the identity of his victims; he pleaded guilty to 5 counts of voyeurism stemming from hidden camera footage recorded from 2007-2009. Those recorded were either using the bathroom or shower in his home’s guest bathroom. A wireless camera was concealed in an alarm clock.
Random chance brought the concealed camera scheme to light when a contractor who was working in the camera saw the bathroom footage on his vehicle’s rear-view backing camera. The two wireless camera systems apparently used the same frequency. The contractor notified police a few days later. Investigators used detection devices to try to hone in on the signal. After six-weeks, they were successful, and eventually determined the source of the transmissions. (more…)

Gregg Alan Larsen, a former St. Paul Central High high school teacher in the Twin cities has been indicted on child pornography charges. Federal agents snagged Larsen, age 49, with over 100,000 child-pornography images and videos on his home computer.
The indictment stemmed from a raid of the man’s Minneapolis home last year. A former special-needs teacher, Larsen allegedly used a hidden camera to film children in the bathroom of the foster home he ran. He was accused Wednesday under a sealed indictment that became public record yesterday afternoon after he appeared before a judge. Larsen taught special education at the Minneapolis high school when school administrators found out he was under Federal investigation. This information comes to us courtesy of the online version of the Pioneer Press.
Larsen faces a possible 90-year sentence for two charges of child pornography production, one charge each for child porn distributionand possession. Larsen was licensed in April 2000 as foster care provider, using his Minneapolis home as a childcare facility. Child protection and privacy laws prevent state officials from announcing whether any children are being cared for in the foster home, but the state indicated that endangered children would be immediately removed.
The FBI caught Larsen during a Maryland child pornography investigation in May 2009. Agents linked Larsen to 20 images/ movies of child pornography that were recovered from a network user’s folder. The images mainly involved boys who had not yet reached puberty. Five images involved victims of child exploitation.
On July 1, 2009, FBI agents raided the man’s home. According to the FBI, the charges that Larsen produced child pornography resulted from two incidents in 2006; the events took place in April, June, and July. Larsen knowingly persuaded two minors to commit explicit sexual acts so that he could record them. The Press does not mention why the indictment took place a year after Larsen was caught.

Adding a nanny cam, or in-home surveillance system, used to be for detecting cases of child abuse or endangerment. However, even if you don’t have any concerns over abuse, an indoor surveillance camera and DVR may provide information on your sitter’s, or children’s, accountability.
As technology’s gotten better, the price for in-home surveillance has actually leveled out, or in some cases, prices have lowered. Nanny cams provide piece of mind for parents who work long hours; often, the wireless recorders can be accessed from a work computer, allowing a parent that misses their child to remain in contact with their child’s life.
Child neglect, or abuse, can happen. Some of the warning signs include unexplained bruises or cuts and fear when the sitter, or nanny, arrives. Fussy, or abnormal outbursts are also cause for concern. A child whose disposition has changed drastically may be a child who is being neglected. If you suspect that something is going on that you are not aware of, no price is too much to pay to ensure your loved-ones safety.
Wireless surveillance, and DVR systems, are easy to set up, and are virtually undetectable. Even if you don’t expect any foul play, an in-home surveillance system is a way to ensure that your child is safe and those who are in your home while you’re away are accountable for their actions. Even if it means feeding the dog while you’re away on vacation.
In most cases, you’ll find that most people act with responsibility and have good intentions. Yet, a casual view, or review, of home activities while away may lead to behaviors that need to be rewarded or addressed. First-hand knowledge of an activity is always the best evidence, and is much more satisfying than conjecture or second-guessing.

The office of Illinois’ Attorney General (IAG) is working to stop the release of a serial child molester and pedophile who is scheduled to be released at the end of February, filing a petition to halt Danny Schwab from leaving prison.
Schwab, known as “Dancing Danny” is in prison following a string of sexual assaults in the Belleville area. He was imprisoned in 2002. The nickname “Dancing Danny” stems from his modus operandi of meeting young people at parties and using alcohol and drugs to lower their defenses before assaulting them. His victims were young boys.
The IAG is using the Sexually Violent Persons Act as the basis for their petition. This act was enacted to keep offenders that are likely to continue committing violent sexual acts in treatment facilities after they’ve served their time in prison. The act is designed to keep offenders away from the public until it is deemed that they’re no longer a threat.
On Friday, prosecutors head to court to present a case that there is definite evidence pointing to the fact that “Dancing Danny” will re-offend if released. The IAG’s office will present significant mental reasons behind their petition to hold Schwab. According to BND.com;
Dr. M. Bellew Smith, a state psychiatrist, conducted an evaluation on Feb. 2 that was attached to the petition that found Schwab was a homosexual pedophile with anti-social and narcissistic personality defects.
Schwab was supposed to spend 40 years in prison but the sentence was reduced to 14 years.
