Newborn Baby Girl Found in Bag in Schaumburg, IL Church Parking Lot

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

This is a unique story because this baby was actually left, of all places, on the top of one of our MSI Detective Investigator’s car. I spoke with the investigator, who wishes to remain anonymous, but was able to get some personal details on this story. I will call him John.

John was leaving his parents church, which he had just attended for the first time on that day, called the Gospel Presbyterian Church in Schaumburg, IL. When he and his sister returned to his car, they found a reusable, canvas bag hanging from his driver’s side mirror. He and his sister opened the bag, but could only see towels and a teddy bear and didn’t want to rifle through somone else’s bag. John brought the bag to the church’s lost and found.

Approximately two hours later, John received a call from the church asking him to return and informing him the police wanted to talk to him about the bag he turned in. After John arrived back at the church, he learned that at some point church members and staff heard a baby crying, but they could not determine where the cries were coming from. Finally, they realized the cries were coming from the bag. They found a 7-pound baby girl of Asian ethnicity tucked underneath the teddy bear and towel, Schaumburg police said.

The baby, a few days old and in good health, according to police, was transported to a local hospital for observation. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will take custody of her once she has been released.

Another twist in this story is that John’s sister happens to be a sponsor for an orphanage. His sister has been wanting to sponsor a foster child. She is currently working with DCFS to try and make this happen with the baby she and her brother found. I wish her the best of luck and hope she is able to take care of this baby as she now feels a sense of obligation and attachment to the child, which is understandable. (more…)

Saudi Family in Fla. Part of 9/11?

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

A news report about a Saudi family that disappeared from their home in Sarasota, Fla., just two weeks before the 9/11 attacks has brought an angry response from the co-chair of a congressional Sept. 11 committee. A former senator from Florida, Bob Graham, who also co-chaired the panel at the time he was senator, says he contacted President Barack Obama’s terrorism adviser after hearing about the news report, that reported the family had had contact with three of the 9/11 pilot hijackers.

“I … urged him to pursue an investigation of these matters, both in Sarasota and elsewhere … and then hopefully release that information to the American people,” Graham said Monday on The Dylan Ratigan Show, suggesting that other Saudi families in the U.S. might have also had contact with the terrorists, most of whom were Saudi.

The FBI office in Tampa issued a statement Monday saying the Sarasota case was one of many leads that “were resolved and determined not to be related to any threat nor connected to the 9/11 plot.” Graham said he had no reason to doubt the news report, which said the couple and their two children abruptly abandoned their luxury home, leaving behind a full refrigerator, clothes, furnishings and a new car in the driveway. However, if true, it reveals another Saudi terrorism connection that the FBI never disclosed to the public or to the 2002 joint Congressional intelligence committee investigating the attacks, said Graham.

It’s a whole new age with the rise of the “smart” gadgets; from iPad to Kindle, and Blackberry to Droid, there’s a plethora of applications and technological advances that enable us to live in this new world.

From using your smartphone to open a garage door to streaming the latest online video to your HD, flatscreen TV, it’s often difficult to stay abreast of the latest advances, let alone the possible security implications that arise when combining these multiple technologies.

One thing that hasn’t changed is stupidity…meaning, “criminal stupidity.” Everyone is should be pretty well acquainted with the fact that whatever you do on a computer is somewhat traceable. Thus, when committing online crimes, criminals often go to public libraries or other similar places where IP addresses are not affiliated with their personal lives. (more…)

Freshman Suicide Attributed to Hidden Camera

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington bridge 72-hours after his roommate streamed live video of his personal interaction with another man over the Internet. His last post on Facebook read, “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry,”
The 18-year-old man jumped to his death, shamed by the fact that the man he was with, and his roommate, seemingly conspired to broadcast his personal life online.
Both the roommate, and another student, Molly Wei, have been charged with invading Clementi’s privacy.

Prior to his death, Clementi asked his roommate, Dharun Ravi, for privacy. Ravi posted on Twitter that he went to his friend, Molly Wei’s room, and claimed that Clementi was involved with another man. Then, according to police, Ravi streamed the video online, which is illegal. A couple of days later, Ravi claimed (again on Twitter) that he would be following up with a sequel video. Although the second attempt to stream Clementi’s personal relationship online failed, the damage was done. (more…)

Do You Need a Nanny Cam?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Adding a nanny cam, or in-home surveillance system, used to be for detecting cases of child abuse or endangerment. However, even if you don’t have any concerns over abuse, an indoor surveillance camera and DVR may provide information on your sitter’s, or children’s, accountability.

As technology’s gotten better, the price for in-home surveillance has actually leveled out, or in some cases, prices have lowered. Nanny cams provide piece of mind for parents who work long hours; often, the wireless recorders can be accessed from a work computer, allowing a parent that misses their child to remain in contact with their child’s life.

Child neglect, or abuse, can happen. Some of the warning signs include unexplained bruises or cuts and fear when the sitter, or nanny, arrives. Fussy, or abnormal outbursts are also cause for concern. A child whose disposition has changed drastically may be a child who is being neglected. If you suspect that something is going on that you are not aware of, no price is too much to pay to ensure your loved-ones safety.

Wireless surveillance, and DVR systems, are easy to set up, and are virtually undetectable.  Even if you don’t expect any foul play, an in-home surveillance system is a way to ensure that your child is safe and those who are in your home while you’re away are accountable for their actions. Even if it means feeding the dog while you’re away on vacation.

In most cases, you’ll find that most people act with responsibility and have good intentions. Yet, a casual view, or review, of home activities while away may lead to behaviors that need to be rewarded or addressed. First-hand knowledge of an activity is always the best evidence, and is much more satisfying than conjecture or second-guessing.
