Who sent me The Rahmfather? I want to know. Please.
If you know the answer, let him or us know.
One morning, John showed up for work and found a mysterious portrait in his office. It was a large framed movie-style poster of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel as some Jewish Al Pacino – and the words, “JOHN FRANCIS KASS’S The Rahmfather.” (sic). Then follows the phrase “All the power on Earth can’t change Chicago.”
The portrait displays a strikingly handsome Rahmfather, thoughtful, pensive, his chin propped on his left hand, a hawk at rest. He is in a dark suit, conservative tie, wearing his Chicago flag lapel pin, and his steel-gray hair slightly spiky, just like Pacino’s in “The Godfather: Part III.”
Oh yeah, and the eyes. The eyes follow you wherever you go.
In Kass’ Tribune Article, he wrote that over the years his readers have sent him some amazing treasures but nothing is as cool as The Rahmfather.
When John sent a photo of the portrait to an aide of Rahm, the aide replied, “Oh, my God, He’s really going to want this.”
Kass replied, “Yeah, I know he’s going to want it. He’s going to want it bad. But tell him he can’t have it. He can send his buddy Jimmy DeLeo over with a box of cannoli and I’d say no. Rahm could put my head in a vise and still I wouldn’t give it to him.”
John asked the Tribune’s editorial cartoonist, Scott Stantis, to evaluate the painting. “This is really good work. This was done by a pro,” said Stantis.
But who painted it? Who sent it? John only knew that a few weeks ago, it was dropped off by a nondescript person at the Tribune Tower.
The story gets even more weird - the painting was addressed to: “JKFC John Kass Fan Club, 211 N. LaSalle Street, Suite 4250.”
There is no fan club at this address. Suite 4250 also does not exist. There are only 41 floors in the building.
Someone asked, “Maybe it was a joke?” An editor reminded John of what a wise columnist often says: In Chicago, when it comes to City Hall or the Outfit, there are no such things as coincidences.
John asked the editor, “Should I sweep it for bugs? Could this be a Trojan Rahm? The editor replied, “It’s up to you, but I would.”
That’s all Kass had to hear. Having the Rahmfather hanging on the wall behind him, peering over his shoulder as he is talking on the phone, he couldn’t take the chance.
So he drove the painting over to the U-Spy Store, 2406 W. Fullerton, to have it examined by counterintelligence experts. (more…)

The couple of the reality TV show The Real Housewives of D.C. has made headlines again – this time over the infidelity of Michaele Salahi. Tareq Salahi, husband of Michaele and the polo-playing aristocrat of the feuding Oasis Winery family, claimed his wife of eight years had gone missing — and that he believed she’d been “kidnapped.” Hours later, the Warren County (Va.) Sheriff’s department released a statement saying they had talked to Michaele, she seemed fine, had willingly left home, and didn’t want her husband to know where she was.
It turns out Michaele had run away into the arms of Journey guitarist Neal Schon. It was later confirmed by a publicist for Journey that Michaele was having an affair with guitarist Neal Schon and was now living with him. Journey, before their recent career resurgence, had played at Salahi-run polo matches. She and Neal Schon had supposedly been in a relationship prior to her marriage to Tareq and Michaele recently realized that she had made the wrong choice in partner.
Tareq Salahi recently appeared on the Matt Lauer show to speak out on this latest family scandal. To watch the interview, go to: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/44637793#44637793
It appears more scandal is on the way, as the couple is now being investigated for alleged charity and business fraud.

Instead of the bad guys, it was Seattle’s most prolific self-styled superhero that ended up in handcuffs.
Police officers arrested the 23-year-old man who calls himself Phoenix Jones early Sunday after he was accused of assaulting several people with pepper spray. He was booked in county jail on four counts of assault, with arraignment set for Thursday, police said Monday.
Jones, who wears a black mask with yellow stripes and a bulging muscle bodysuit, said he was only trying to stop a street brawl.
“Just because he’s dressed up in costume, it doesn’t mean he’s in special consideration or above the law. You can’t go around pepper spraying people because you think they are fighting,” said Seattle police spokesman Det. Mark Jamieson. (more…)

The following story is actually one of my worst nightmares. With a recent rash of home invasions in the city of Chicago, I feel more secure knowing I have a home security system. I am considering adding a video security/surveillance camera.
For actor Nicolas Cage, making the new thriller movie “Trespass” hit close to home.
Cage, at the Toronto film festival along with director Joel Schumacher promoting the film about a home invasion, said that he has actually lived through the nightmare in real life.
“It was two in the morning. I was living in Orange County at the time and was asleep with my wife. My two-year old at the time was in another room. I opened my eyes and there was a naked man wearing my leather jacket eating a Fudgesicle in front of my bed,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
“I know it sounds funny … but it was horrifying.” (more…)

Phone hacking victim Sienna Miller sat down with TODAY’s Amy Robach to discuss how the British phone hacking scandal affected her private life.
Sienna became her own detective to determine if someone was hacking into her cell phone. Miller says she planted false stories with friends in an attempt to figure out why intimate details of her life were showing up in British tabloids. She’d plant the false stories to see if they appeared in the newspaper, and thus expose a person betraying her, but the false stories never appeared. “At the time, I was incredibly paranoid,” she said.
Miller said she also became suspicious when it became clear there were a large number of voice mail messages that friends said they’d left and she never received.
Once it became clear to her what was going on, Miller said she was still reluctant to take on Rupert Murdoch’s media empire for fear that it could damage her career. “It was just too horrendous to not expose, and I was really happy that I did,” she said. -AP
Miller reached a £100,000 (NZ$191,000) settlement with the tabloid News of the World, which had hacked into her cell phone messages.

As a politician, I assume that if you do no wrong, you have nothing to worry about. Unless of course you are planning a huge tax cut and want to surprise everyone before the Holiday Season or election day.
Lisa Donovan of the Chicago Sun-Times reported last week that Cook County Board President Todd Stroger’s office underwent a hush-hush after-hours security inspection Wednesday night, but top aides are denying a report that Stroger’s 5th Floor executive offices at 118 N. Clark St. were swept for bugging devices. “There was no scanning or screening for electronic devices,” said Marcel Bright, a Stroger spokesman.
As a trained countermeasures tech, it is often times that you will do a sweep at a facility where the staff is not around to arouse suspicion. The last thing you want is to have the staff see you are worried about an FBI surveillance bug in the office. After all, aren’t you simply serving the people as best you can in an honest attempt to better your city, county, state or country? Maybe outside of Cook County you are.
It was reported that David Ramos, Executive Director of Cook County’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office was accompanied by a North Side security firm whose owners — identified as former FBI agents specializing in countersurveillance, according to a visitor’s log for the county building. According to the sheriff’s visitor’s log Ramos was accompanied by the owners of the Chicago security firm Dennis & Salp Consultants Inc. Jim Salp and Mike Dennis, along with two other men identified as Dennis Wysong and Bryan Johnson.
About 9:30 p.m., Cook County Sheriff’s deputies, in charge of security at the building, spotted several people “removing items” from Stroger’s 5th floor offices, said Steve Patterson, a spokesman for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. Deputies asked Ramos —whom they know has an office on the 7th floor — about what was unfolding, but he politely declined to answer their questions.
“When we asked Director Ramos to explain what was going on, he gave his business card to the deputy, he said if anyone had any questions the sheriff himself should call himself. Director Ramos didn’t believe he had to give any further explanation,” Patterson said. Ramos did not return multiple calls from the Sun-Times seeking comment.
But Stroger’s spokesman, Bright, said Ramos was conducting a security inspection. “He was simply inspecting and preparing for some security issues that will be addressed in the coming weeks,” Bright said of Ramos. Pressed for details, Bright said: “I can’t discuss that right now.”
When contacted at the firm’s Northwest Side office, Mike Dennis denied being at the county Wednesday night and offered only vague answers about whether his firm was working on security in Stroger’s office: “Could be.” He declined further comment, but one website says of its owners “As Special Agents for the FBI, Mike Dennis and Jim Salp received the highest level of sophisticated training and experience in the fields of electronic surveillance and countermeasures.”
While Bright said Wednesday night’s inspection had been scheduled weeks in advance, he wasn’t sure why it was after-hours. Ramos and the other four signed in at 6 p.m.
“I imagine it’s easier to do when the offices are closed,” Bright said.
But at one point, sources say, that proved difficult for Ramos.
Between roughly 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., Ramos was reaching out to building management to unlock some of the doors in the suites. He asked building staff to unlock doors to Stroger’s office and the suite once inhabited by former Deputy Chief of Staff Carla Oglesby, who is now awaiting trial on charges she took $300,000 in taxpayer money in a contracting scheme, sources said. Indeed, the investigation is ongoing — but Ramos has been named by law enforcement as a key witness in the case. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office, which is investigating the contracting scheme, was notified about Wednesday’s so-called security inspection.
In Friday’s editions, Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported Stroger’s executive offices had been swept for eavesdropping devices on Wednesday night, prompting investigators to come in a day later — concerned that computer files may have been removed in the sweep. Boxes of hard drives and photo electronic devices were haulted out after hours Thursday, Sneed reported.
But officials kept mum about any link between the reported sweep Wednesday and investigators swooping in on Thursday. Cook County Inspector General Patrick Blanchard confirmed his investigators were working in the executive offices Thursday afternoon as part of the ongoing probe in to the contracting scheme. “Yes, we did have investigators on the 5th floor collecting information, but it was not under the cover of darkness.” He wouldn’t say exactly what was collected. But Stroger spokesman Bright said: “They didn’t confiscate a computer or anything like that.”
It’s a sad state of affairs here in Cook County. We are seeing elected public officials more concerned about getting busted by a sting or investigation than they are about getting us out of the economic hole we are in. It’s very likely tax payer money was spent on this debugging operation. Did Stoger invent something he didn’t want the Republicans to steal? Did he create a way to clone himself and stay in office even when he’s gone? Unfortunately, this is Cook County at its normalcy. Hopefully the norm will change and we will get some people who care about the people and not saving their own ass from an FBI sting or a State Police investigation.

It was Friday, July 16, 2010 at 4:45pm when we received a call at our U-Spy Store Chicago location from the production crew for the movie Transformers currently being shot in downtown Chicago. The Transformers producer knew what she wanted but didn’t exactly know what it was called. She described the product as being a larger bullet or cylindrical shaped camera that can automatically pan back and forth with a controller. But she in fact already had the described camera. All she really needed was the mount that could move the camera as well as the controller.
Quickly our team contacted several of our area vendors who are scattered all over the Chicagoland area. One by one, our vendors told us the same story. This is actually very old technology replaced by the dome shaped PTZ camera. But the producers made it clear they did not want the more modern dome shaped PTZ. They needed something that could move the large bullet camera. It’s all about the visuals and in a movie, capturing the mood and atmosphere is much more important that having the latest technology.
After about 10 calls, we finally struck gold. We found the controller and panning mechanism in one of our vendors located in the Northwest Suburban area. It was now 5:06 and we needed to get approval, payment and retrieve the equipment before the 6pm closing time. About 5:30, after a flurry of calls and emails with attachments of images showing what the mechanism looked like, we received their approval.
Now the hard part for us arrives. We needed to get to the vendor by 6 to pick up the equipment and find a willing U-Spy Store team member to personally deliver the equipment. Gabriel was heading back to the office after a long day of service calls. I called him and he agreed to delay the start of his weekend by a couple of hours by diverting his route home and stop at the vendor. He arrived minutes before close and then called me to say he couldn’t make it on time. Gabriel likes to practical joke but didn’t terrorize me too long. He said he had the equipment in hand and wanted to know what to do next.
Meanwhile, back at U-Spy headquarters, German was more than willing to drive the equipment down to the Chicago Loop area to personally deliver the goods and perhaps get that Hollywood career jump started. I made sure that German had everything they needed to make things work including power supply, wiring and connectors.
A better than average Friday afternoon rush hour helped make things run smoothly and soon German took the hand off from Gabriel and was delivering the much anticipated equipment to the movie set. At 7:57pm I received a text message indicating Operation Transformers was completed. A little more than 3 hours after the call, our U-Spy team accomplished our mission. Damn good on a Friday afternoon!
Did we save the movie? Probably! Would the movie have figured out a way to continue shooting and production without The U-Spy Store? Probably not! Is the movie going to get 4 stars, 2 thumbs up and favorable reviews because The U-Spy Store saved the day? Absolutely Yes! In fact I am personally endorsing this movie right now by stating this will be the Movie of the Year!. Any questions of payoffs should be discussed with our legal team as soon as the trail of our former governor is complete.
So the moral of this is, when you need something fast and hard to find, give The U-Spy Store call. Even when shooting a B movie, The U-Spy Store will transform that script into an Academy Award winner. Or at least a movie that was saved by The U-Spy store and not in the editing room. And remember to keep an eye out for those panning cameras and remember who saved the day? The U-Spy Store!
