News International Agrees to Pay $3.2 Million to Family of Murdered British Schoolgirl

Monday, October 31st, 2011

The Murdock family’s troubles continue to mount. Despite all the evidence against them, the family has been giving interviews to the media in hopes of drumming up some support for Mr. Murdock. Many people have found these interviews to be inappropriate.

Rupert Murdoch’s company agreed last week to pay 2 million pounds ($3.2 million) to the family of a murdered schoolgirl whose phone was hacked by the News of the World tabloid.

Confirmation of the settlement was made by News International, the U.K. newspaper publishing division of News Corp. The family of Milly Dowler confirmed the settlement in a joint statement. Murdoch also will donate 1 million pounds ($1.6 million) to charities chosen by the Dowler family.

Murdoch was forced to shut down the 168-year-old News of the World publication in July after evidence emerged that its reporters had eavesdropped on the telephone voice mail messages of the 13-year-old who disappeared in 2002 and was later found murdered.

Murdoch’s global News Corp. has expressed contrition, launched an internal inquiry and set aside 20 million pounds ($32 million) to compensate victims, who could number in their hundreds. Detectives have informed more than 450 people that they might have been spied on by the newspaper. (more…)

Newborn Baby Girl Found in Bag in Schaumburg, IL Church Parking Lot

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

This is a unique story because this baby was actually left, of all places, on the top of one of our MSI Detective Investigator’s car. I spoke with the investigator, who wishes to remain anonymous, but was able to get some personal details on this story. I will call him John.

John was leaving his parents church, which he had just attended for the first time on that day, called the Gospel Presbyterian Church in Schaumburg, IL. When he and his sister returned to his car, they found a reusable, canvas bag hanging from his driver’s side mirror. He and his sister opened the bag, but could only see towels and a teddy bear and didn’t want to rifle through somone else’s bag. John brought the bag to the church’s lost and found.

Approximately two hours later, John received a call from the church asking him to return and informing him the police wanted to talk to him about the bag he turned in. After John arrived back at the church, he learned that at some point church members and staff heard a baby crying, but they could not determine where the cries were coming from. Finally, they realized the cries were coming from the bag. They found a 7-pound baby girl of Asian ethnicity tucked underneath the teddy bear and towel, Schaumburg police said.

The baby, a few days old and in good health, according to police, was transported to a local hospital for observation. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will take custody of her once she has been released.

Another twist in this story is that John’s sister happens to be a sponsor for an orphanage. His sister has been wanting to sponsor a foster child. She is currently working with DCFS to try and make this happen with the baby she and her brother found. I wish her the best of luck and hope she is able to take care of this baby as she now feels a sense of obligation and attachment to the child, which is understandable. (more…)

NYPD Officers Arrested for Alleged Gun Smuggling

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Eight NYPD officers and one New Jersey corrections officer have been arrested on charges that they were running a gun-smuggling ring that trafficked more than $1 million in illegal weapons and stolen goods.

The officers arrested include five active-duty officers assigned to Brooklyn and three retired NYPD officers; however, two of the retired officers were active when committing the alleged crimes. All those arrested were picked up by FBI agents and NYPD Internal Affairs investigators early Tuesday.

Some of those arrested smuggled 20 firearms as recently as Sept. 22, according to the criminal complaint. The confiscated guns included three M-16 rifles, one shotgun and 16 handguns, most of which had their serial numbers removed.

One officer bragged to an informant in July, as an associate displayed a shotgun for sale, that it was a “sample” and that they could get anything “from A to Z.”

The allegations and the timing are troubling for the NYPD. Commissioner, Ray Kelly, has joined with Mayor Bloomberg in speaking out on illegal guns as a nationwide scourge that threatens public safety, particularly that of police officers. (more…)

Police Raid Home After ‘Heroin for Sale’ Fliers Posted

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Here is a story that shows you what can be accomplished when neighbors get involved and work together, and with the police, to keep their neighborhood safe:

A North Portland home was raided last week after fliers were distributed throughout the neighborhood advertising drug sales at the address, police said.

Of the seven adults inside the home during the raid, six were arrested on various drug charges. A teenager in the home was placed in protective custody.

On October 18, police executed a search warrant at a home in the 3900 block of North Massachusetts Avenue, according to Lt. Robert King with the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers said they found nearly 20 grams of marijuana, more than 10 grams of heroin, a sawed-off shotgun, thousands of dollars in cash and the materials for a methamphetamine lab inside the home.

“The neighborhood response team began this investigation over a year ago because of numerous neighborhood complaints,” King said. “At one point a neighbor gave officers an 8-inch by 10-inch flier found in the neighborhood that said ‘Heroin for sale’ and gave the address and the names of the dealers.”

Neighbors were grateful that the investigation led to arrests.

“It was taxpayer money at work. It was great,” said neighbor Doug Barrett. “It’s what we’ve been longing for, so it was a great relief, and we told them so.”

“They came out smiling; they were happy to see us,” said Sgt. John Birkinbine of the positive response from the neighbors. “A lady brought a bucket full of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies to us to tell us thank you. We felt like firefighters for a few minutes. It was good.”

Food Fight! Then Students Pepper Sprayed

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Administrators are investigating a Norfolk school security guard’s use of pepper spray during a food fight.

The incident occurred during lunch last Tuesday at the cafeteria of Lafayette-Winona Middle School. Norfolk Public Schools spokesperson Elizabeth Mather said that the officer used pepper spray to break up the fight.

37 students who complained of physical symptoms following the pepper spray were examined by the school nurse, and their parents were contacted. A concerned parent wrote 10 On Your Side saying the spray caused some of the kids with asthma to get sick.

“It was just terrible in there,” 12-year-old Derrell Hairston said.

“He stayed up all night coughing and gagging. I just feel like you can’t treat these kids like animals … they’re going to act like animals,” Hairston’s mom, Tyheshia, added.

Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard Bentley said, “I’d be upset absolutely I don’t blame the parents for being upset I understand that.”

According to school security officer policy, the security officer must give a warning and only use the pepper spray when lesser forms of force don’t work. (more…)

Georgia Tech Researchers Turn iPhone Into spiPhone

Monday, October 24th, 2011

What if a hacker could use your phone to track what you were typing on your keyboard just inches away?

A research team at Georgia Tech has discovered a way this can be done, using a smartphone accelerometer-the internal device that detects when and how the phone is tilted-to sense keyboard vibrations and decipher complete sentences with up to 80 percent accuracy. They say that although the procedure is not easy; it is definitely possible with the latest generations of smartphones.

“We first tried our experiments with an iPhone 3GS, and the results were difficult to read,” said Patrick Traynor, assistant professor in Georgia Tech’s School of Computer Science. “But then we tried an iPhone 4, which has an added gyroscope to clean up the accelerometer noise, and the results were much better. We believe that most smartphones made in the past two years are sophisticated enough to launch this attack.”

In the past, Traynor said, researchers have accomplished similar results using microphones, but a microphone is a much more sensitive instrument than an accelerometer. A typical smartphone’s microphone samples vibration roughly 44,000 times per second, while even newer phone’s accelerometers sample just 100 times per second-two full orders of magnitude less often.

Also, manufacturers have installed security around a phone’s microphone; the phone’s operating system is programmed to ask users whether to give new applications access to most built-in sensors, including the microphone. Accelerometers typically are not protected in this way.

If you suspect someone has surreptitiously installed spyware into your cellphone, bring it to the U-Spy Store. Our team has the knowledge and equipment to find and remove this type of software.

How to Keep Your Kids Safe While Trick or Treating

Monday, October 24th, 2011

It’s that time of year where excited kids are planning their costumes and gearing up for a fun night of trick or treating. What child, or adult for that matter, can resist filling up their bags with all those yummy treats? As always though, safety precautions need to be taken to keep your little goblins and ghosts safe. Here are some tips for keeping trick or treating safe:

  • Parents should accompany their children when possible.
  • Children who are younger than 12 years old should not be allowed to go trick or treating by themselves.
  • If older children go without parent supervision, they should go with at least two other children. They should have a planned route and a time to be home.
  • Discuss safety prior to your children leaving. Remember the “never talk to strangers” rule. Also, tell your children to never enter someone’s home.
  • Make sure store-bought costumes and accessories — such as wigs, hats and masks — are flame-retardant. The label should clearly state that. If it doesn’t, don’t buy it.
  • Wear bright colors – both parents and kids should wear brightly-colored clothing. If you are wearing a costume that is dark in color, apply reflective tape to parts of your clothes or shoes.
  • Be sure your child can see – smaller children love store-bought costumes that come complete with a facemask. Double-check that your child can see through the eyeholes of the mask to prevent tripping, falling or running into something. Face painting is preferred to masks. If using make-up or paint, test on a small area of the skin in advance to ensure your child is not allergic. Remove before bedtime to prevent skin irritation.
  • Visit familiar places only - take your children to trick-or-treat at places where you know people.
  • Inspect all candy – this is a commonly known rule of trick-or-treating, and yet so many parents don’t follow it. Parents should remove all unwrapped candy from buckets (cupcakes, homemade candy, etc.). Children should not eat homemade treats made by strangers. Check all candy for signs of tampering or choking hazards.
  • Obey the rules - remember to follow traffic safety rules. Always look both ways before crossing the street. Stay on the sidewalks and walk at a normal pace. Also, be sure to check for any curfew rules that apply to your area.

There is one more safety measure you can take. I realize this is a very personal choice, but if you are comfortable with this, you can place a GPS tracking device on your child (hidden somewhere in their costume). It would be an added measure of safety that may bring you more peace of mind.

I hope you and your family have a fun and safe time trick-or-treating. Happy Halloween!
